  • Edido (Ethiopia)

For the second year in a row The Barn are starting their Ethiopian season with this stunning coffee from Yirgacheffe. Edido is a private washing station in the Aricha region. Rich soil and pristine forest, combined with high elevation and a strong coffee growing culture form the perfect recipe for some of the greatest coffee in the world. Their washed espresso has notes of sweet nectarine, honey suckle, jasmine, black tea and milk chocolate. The silky body and a lovely acidity balance out the taste experience of this cup.

Heirloom grows wild in Yirgacheffe which is located at the heart of Ethiopia, the birth place of coffee. The purity and longevity of the coffee growing culture here has not only resulted in amazing cup qualities, but also strong disease resistant coffee plants - which means that all Ethiopian coffees are literally organic by nature. This washed Edido is theirs to roast exclusively, which creates a strong foundation for a long lasting relationship at source.

  • Mbokam AA (Kenya)

Mbokam Estate is situated in an extraordinary microclimate: the farm is north facing toward Mount Kenya and is divided by a creek. Cooler mornings and evenings allow the cherries to ripen more slowly, creating a unique cup profile. Sweet flavours of plum and forest fruits meld with of rose, hibiscus and cranberry. You can expect a structured body with a deep perfumy aroma.

Reforms in Kenya now allow buyers to purchase beans more directly from single, smaller estates. Last year The Barn started their exclusive relationship with Mbokam and they bought the whole output of exportable grade beans. Kenya suffered from Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) this year which damaged many farms and they lost their entire harvest. Working with them and their local partners, Sucafina, protected Mbokam and they could limit their losses to only 10%. Our stable price guarantee also makes Mbokam immune to highly fluctuating global coffee prices.

  • Caballero (Honduras)

Marysabel Caballero is as driven as her famous father, Don Fabio. Together with her husband Moises, the Caballeros are fully committed to producing quality in a sustainable way. They won their first Cup of Excellence in 2004. This microlot comes from El Pantanal, which has been The Barn's favourite plot for several years now. Flavour notes of red grape, sweet cherry, toffee and butterscotch. This is a sweet coffee with a velvety mouthfeel.

2019 was a great year for the Caballeros, who now manage more than 200 hectares; divided into 30 distinct plots. They focus on environmental friendly processing and consistently high coffee qualities. Organic fertilizers are used and they grow a diversity of fruits and vegetables. Pickers are using two bags: one for good, ripe cherries and one for bad, damaged cherries. This microlot has only 360kg of the finest green coffee, and The Barn is very happy to present it to you once again this year.

  • Himalaya Maracaturra (El Salvador)

A few years ago Mauricio Salaverria changed his farm operations aiming to be one of the best producers in his country. Since then he has won Cup of Excellence a massive 10 times. When you combine Mauricio´s passion with an extensive skill at processing, the result is this incredible natural Maracaturra. This lot has notes of pear and milk chocolate, tied together with a gentle balancing acidity and a creamy mouthfeel.

The nutritious soil that covers the Apaneca mountain range its shade-providing trees make for an ideal coffee growing environment. Cherries are handpicked, sorted and dry slowly over 12-15 days on raised beds. Mauricio has spent years experimenting with both honey and natural processed coffees, but his patience and hand-crafted approach is what has made him an expert. The Maracaturra varietal The Barn is featuring from Finca Himalaya is one of Mauricio's most promising new crops - it has the bean size and balance cup profile associated with the Maragogype hybrids, but on a more productive plant with higher agricultural resilience.
