Algeciras is located in the middle part of the Magdalena Valley in central Huila. This area is known for its large scale agricultural production with 69% of its crops represented by coffee, sugar cane, cocoa, and fruit. This is a community blend made up of smallholder farmers surrounding the town of Algeciras. The processing of this lot is quite basic, but due to the strength of the terroir in this region, the coffee outscores these humble farming methods. Over 300 families here have made the decision to give up their opium poppy crops to grow coffee as it has become the more sustainable choice. The newly formed Huila Coffee Fair initiative is helping to highlight coffees from smallholders in the area and is the reason why families are turning more and more to coffee production. This Fair promotes and supports farmers by showcasing their product to a large global audience, helping to secure higher prices for their crops.
