ABOUT THE ALEJO CASTRO, FILTRE
We are thrilled to be starting a new direct relationship with a remarkable farm: Volcan Azul.
Alejo belongs to the fifth generation of the Castro-Kahle family, who have been cultivating coffee on the side of the Poas volcano in central Costa Rica for over 100 years. They grow more than 20 varieties including Caturra, Catuai, Villa Sarchi, Geisha, SL28 and Rume Sudan. Alejo is an extremely passionate and knowledgeable coffee grower. He‘s continuously experimenting with new varieties and less conventional processes with the goal of producing some of the best coffees in the world. Volcan Azul is also regularly awarded at the Cup of Excellence competition.
In addition to their pursuit of quality, the family has chosen to conserve some 200 hectares of forest located above their coffee fields in order to preserve local biodiversity. Alejo is convinced that the forest thus conserved allows his coffee trees to benefit from a unique micro-climate: a light damp veil sweeps the farm everyday, even in the dry season.
We don't often offer natural coffees but for this superb 100% Caturra lot, we had to make an exception! Intense, clean and complex, it reveals deep flavors of fig, sweet cherry and vanilla as well as a hint of spice reminding us of a gingerbread cookie.
