This year I started brewing 12.5g, down from 18-20g. I tried everything but couldn't quite match the cup quality of the larger dose. I found I was getting over-extracted bitterness before I had a good extraction level, meaning the cup didn't quite pop. The premise of the boosters is that flow through the filter only happens where the brewer touches the filter. Assuming this is true (it stands up to my testing), this explains the issues I was having. For smaller doses, a significant portion of the bed lies below the brewer where there is no contact and therefore no flow. This leads to uneven extraction and the 'over-extracted before well extracted' behaviour. The cone booster completely fixed this for me. I actually had to make some changes to reduce extraction since the cup was too boomy when using my old technique with the booster.
I'm not convinced it'll make much of a difference for bigger cup, where less of the bed is being bypassed at the bottom. But for smaller doses I think it is worth the high price.
This makes my coffee extraction smoother and gives the flavor a more comfortable, well-rounded feel. So far, I’m satisfied with it.
