The owner and founder of Suke Quto is Tesfaye Bekele and he has quite a story. In the late 90s, bushfires ravaged the coffee growing areas of Guji. At the time, Tesfaye worked as a government official in Natural Resource and Environmental Protection. As locals returned to the area, he saw a need to diversify the agri-economic output of the region- from staples like teff and maize, to replant and include coffee.
The locals initially accepted the idea, but soon lost interest after learning they would need to wait 4-5 years for the first harvest. Undeterred and convinced replanting trees was the best way to preserve the Guji forest, Tesfaye took it upon himself to start the project. Starting with a small parcel of land, he started a coffee nursery. And not being able to find motivated staff (due to the long wait period before seeing results), he quit his job and became a coffee farmer. After his first successful harvest, locals returned asking for help with seedlings. So now many farms in Guji are inspired by the Suke Quto Farm.
